
DIY open-source smart glasses kit from Based Hardware — XIAO ESP32S3 Sense camera and mic, host-side AI via the Omi stack.
Omi Glass is Based Hardware’s developer-oriented smart-glasses kit: a DIY glasses form factor that captures first-person photos (and, with firmware changes, audio/video) for lifelogging and AI memory recall. It is sold as an open hardware + software path under the Omi / OpenGlass lineage — not a sealed consumer Ray-Ban-class product.
The usual build centers on a Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32S3 Sense board (camera + mic on the module), 3D-printed mounts, and a multi-cell LiPo pack. Firmware is flashed with the Arduino ESP32 core (OPI PSRAM). The glasses act as sensors: frames go to a companion Expo/web app and the wider Omi stack for transcription, summaries, and Q&A. Heavy vision-language work runs on a phone, laptop, or local host (OpenAI / Groq / Ollama-class backends), not as a closed on-glasses OS.
For an agentic operating system this is an observe endpoint you can own: site walks and shop-floor moments become timestamped visual + spoken context without typing twice, then feed a private STT/VLM path into cases and proposals. Pair it with the Omi pendant and an edge box when you want continuous ambient audio plus first-person vision on the same open stack.
Limit: Amazon currently surfaces BOM parts (XIAO ESP32S3 Sense), not a finished retail glasses SKU — primary buy remains omi.me/glass and the GitHub omiGlass tree. Pre-built kits have been offered in limited runs; assembly and flashing are still the default path.
