What it is

Emergency control is the hard stop for agent fleets: pause-all, kill in-flight tool calls, revoke credentials, drain queues, and break-glass procedures when behavior is wrong, hijacked, or cascading. It is the ops analogue of a circuit breaker — independent of the agent’s own willingness to stop.

MIT Index fields list emergency stops under autonomy & control. OWASP ASI08 (cascading failures) and ASI10 (rogue agents) assume you can interrupt the blast radius faster than a human can click through a UI per agent.

Why it matters

An agentic OS that can place orders, send mail, or move money without a fleet kill switch is unfinished. Emergency control must be operable by a party other than the agent — and preferably outside the compromised control path.
