Arize Phoenix is an open-source AI observability platform for experimentation, evaluation, and troubleshooting of LLM/agent apps. It offers OpenTelemetry-based tracing, LLM evals, versioned datasets/experiments, playground and prompt management, plus OpenInference auto-instrumentation across common frameworks/providers. Self-host locally, in containers, or cloud; Arize AX is the managed production sibling that reuses the same instrumentation. Open-core research stance (OSS Phoenix + commercial AX).
Agentic OS installs need span-level visibility into tool calls and retrieval, not only token dashboards. Phoenix is the research pick when you want self-hosted OTEL/OpenInference tracing + evals. Prefer Langfuse for a full OSS LLM-engineering platform with strong prompt/eval workflow; prefer OpenLLMetry when you only want instrumentation into an existing OTEL backend; prefer Helicone for proxy/gateway logging with minimal code change; prefer LangSmith when already deep in LangChain SaaS.
Apps emit OTEL/OpenInference traces into Phoenix. Operators inspect spans, run evals against datasets, and iterate prompts/experiments in the UI (or via MCP clients against Phoenix).

Product / tracing role
Arize-ai/phoenix · MODERATE
“Based on OpenTelemetry to increase compatibility and reduce vendor lock-in”
Docs / features
Phoenix documentation · MODERATE
“Observability is essential for understanding and debugging LLM applications. Unlike traditional software, LLM applications involve complex, non-deterministic interactions that can be challenging to monitor and debug.”
Contrast vs Langfuse
Langfuse contrast · MODERATE
“Langfuse is an open-source LLM engineering platform that helps teams collaboratively debug, analyze, and iterate on their LLM applications.”
