Zep

Taxonomy

Zep Cloud is a managed agent memory platform. The getzep/zep GitHub repository is not the product server — it holds examples, framework integrations, ingestion tools, ontology, benchmarks, and eval harness for building with Zep Cloud. Official SDKs: zep-cloud (Python), @getzep/zep-cloud (TS), zep-go.

The open-source temporal knowledge graph that powers Zep is Graphiti (separate repo). Zep Community Edition is deprecated (code under legacy/); unsupported for new work.

Why it matters here

Long-horizon agent work needs time-aware memory (facts that change), not only vector chat snippets. Zep is the research pack for Cloud memory + Graphiti graph memory; use Graphiti OSS when you must self-host the graph engine, and Zep Cloud when you want managed memory APIs and integrations (LangGraph, CrewAI, ADK, Mastra, …).

How it works

  1. Sign up at getzep.com; use Cloud SDKs for memory APIs.
  2. Optionally study/fork Graphiti for self-hosted temporal KG behavior.
  3. Use getzep/zep examples/integrations/ingestion (zep-ingest) to wire frameworks and bulk data.
  4. Avoid Community Edition (legacy/) for new installs.

When to reach for it

  • Use when: you want managed agent memory and/or Graphiti-style temporal knowledge graphs.
  • Skip when: you need a simple add/search memory library (mem0), LangGraph-only tools (langmem), or a full MemGPT agent OS (letta).
  • Prefer instead: Graphiti alone for OSS graph; Mem0 for multi-level memory without Zep Cloud.

Limits

  • Repo naming trap: cloning getzep/zep does not deploy Zep — Cloud + SDKs do.
  • CE deprecated: Community Edition paths are dead ends.
  • Open core: advanced/hosted features live on Cloud; Graphiti is the OSS engine slice.
  • Not company SoR: graph facts still need human gates for authority/money.
