Neo4j is an open-core property graph database for storing and querying nodes, relationships, and properties at scale. Applications speak Cypher (and drivers for Python/JS/Go/Java) to model domains as graphs, run traversals, and use graph data science / GraphRAG tooling. The community edition is GPL-3.0 on neo4j/neo4j; enterprise features and managed Aura are commercial. Prefer Neo4j when explicit graph modeling, mature operators tooling, and ecosystem depth outweigh thinner options like graphs-in-Postgres (apache-age) or lighter Redis-adjacent graphs (falkordb).
In this catalog it is the Knowledge Graphs option when you need to query typed entities and relationships. Keep Neo4j on the observe/propose side of the loop: useful signals and drafts, with human or policy authority still required before anything irreversible runs.
Entities and edges are written via Cypher/GQL/SQL; queries traverse relationships to support retrieval or reasoning beyond vector similarity.
